For those of you who haven’t found love, or who have found love and hate the person now–this is for you. The Smiths/Morrissey have some of the best lyrics. They’re so sharp and clever that they always put a smile on my face even though they’re totally depressing. So without further blabbing, this one’s for you:
“Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking when I said I’d like to smash every tooth in your head/Sweetness, sweetness I was only joking when I said by rights you should be bludgeoned in your bed.” (Bigmouth Strikes Again by The Smiths)
“And you have never been in love until you’ve seen the dawn rise behind the Home for the Blind[...]You have never been in love until you’ve seen the sunlight thrown over smashed human bone.” (First of the Gang to Die by Morrissey)
In my life why do I give valuable time to people who don’t care if I live or die?/Two lovers entwined pass me by and heaven knows I’m miserable now/In my life why do I smile at people who I’d much rather kick in the eye?” (Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now by The Smiths)
“She told me she loved me which means she must be insane/They said they respect me which means their judgement is crazy/He said he wants to befriend me which means he can’t possibly know me.” (How Can Anybody Possibly Know How I Feel? by Morrissey)
“So, goodbye please stay with your own kind and I’ll stay with mine. And “love” is just a miserable lie/ you have destroyed my flower-like life not once – twice/ you have corrupted my innocent mind not once – twice.” (Miserable Lie by The Smiths)
“So what difference does it make? It makes none, but now you have gone and you must be looking very old tonight.” (What Difference Does It Make? by The Smiths)
“Last night I dreamt that somebody loved me no hope – but no harm just another false alarm.” (Last Night I Dreamt That Somebody Loved Me by The Smiths)
And a romantic one…just for good measure:
“And if a double-decker bus crashes in to us, to die by your side is such a heavenly way to die. And if a ten ton truck kills the both of us, to die by your side, well the pleasure, the privilege is mine.” (There is a Light that Never Goes Out by The Smiths)
Isn’t Morrissey asexual? That’s not to say he’s incapable of loving or being loved but he’s probably incapable of loving and being loved.
Is he? I always figured he was gay, but he does sing about women a lot so it makes sense that he would be asexual. I think Allen Rickman (my love) is asexual is well. You’re probably right about him loving and being loved.
I shouldn’t be so mean. He’s human and he needs to be loved, just like everybody else does.
“Nothing’s changed, I still love you. Only slightly, only slightly, less than I used to…my love”
A bit of a combination of both.
Ah The Smiths, how I love thee. I know Morrissey is probably the biggest knob going around, but damn he writes good music.
Oh that’s a great one too! His lyrics are just a gold mine of great words. He really does write great stuff. But yeah he is a knob because I was ready to go to one of his concerts in London and he canceled them. Damn him!
NO! That would be the most heartbreaking thing ever! My soul quietly weeps for you. I would suggest going and listening to one of their songs but I feel it may exacerbate the problem in this situation
I LOOOOOVE “First of the Gang to Die”. I’m YouTubing the shi*t out of that now. Oh fabulous Morrisey, you were such a ball of sexually-confused anguish.
YES. That’s a favorite of mine and my husband. Such a good tune. Haha Morrissey’s sexually confused anguish proves to be the perfect equation for making great lyrics.
And may it continue I say!
Music to wallow by.
I could be wrong, but Morrisey may have been the first lyricist to use the word “coma.” At least the first to make it sound so lovely.
You might be right. Girlfriend in a Coma is one of my faves. I love the depressing lyrics juxtaposed with the catchy, happy tune. Practically perfect in every way.
I think all those lyrics are a personal statement against his hair.
Hahah it’s possible! He has some pretty wild locks.
“So you go and you stand on your own
And you leave on your own
And you go home and you cry
And you want to die ”
He’s so depressing that he’s practically uplifting. So emo. So angsty. I never would have survived high school without him.
Yeah he’s pretty great. I knew who he was in high school, but I didn’t give his music a chance until afterwards. Mistake on my part. High school is all about being emo!
I do love these — they make me smile.
Thanks Sandee! I thought you might appreciate them. I think Morrissey is a lot like you and I.
This is exaclty what I needed
.
Glad you like them! Yes, a lover of lyrics would appreciate this post!
And as a lover of the Smiths, it’s a double loving
.
thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou!
Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou for reading it!
Very clever for Valentine’s day, Lily! I think listening to Morrisey at this very moment might put me over the edge. Agree? Either that, or I’ll embrace the anguish and make it my own?
Why thank you! I think Morrissey’s tender voice my console you, you never know…
But maybe just stick to Rodriguez. Cold Fact…lol!
I am so glad that I read these the day AFTER Valentine’s Day.
Haha yeah much safer! Being miserable on V-Day isn’t for the lighthearted!
I’m not sure if I’ve ever heard any of his songs, but I feel awful admitting that because all the lyrics you posted sound awesome and the sorta stuff I like to listen to. So I have no excuse. I shall be researching him after work today. Hurrah.
Also…that hair. Seriously.
Oh Pen, girl. You are missing out. He’s awesome! Defs check him out. Although, it might not be you style (because I don’t know what your style is!) which is understandable. But appreciating his lyrics already makes you a fan!
I know…what sweet locks…
Depression for Valentine’s Day?
Count me in!
Super fun times, right? Join the party!
Will do, Lily!
I actually got a valentines card at work last week; it was probably for a joke, though it was written in lovely handwriting so it put a smile on my face when I was dead set on being bitter and hateful. Still, that cards in the bin now; isn’t that always the way?
Lol aww Pete, I’m sure it wasn’t a joke. People love you, how could they not?
But yeah, everything ends up in the trash anyway…
